It had been a long ride.

Shadow stood within one of the many extensive hallways of the Palace. He retraced how much his life had changed. How much the world had changed. How much he had changed. He tried to grasp everything that had happened; everything that had led him to stand where he was now. His head pounded, the headache seemingly increasing every second.

He collapsed to the ground, falling to his knees.

He was surrounded by hundreds of elves; elves of all kinds. So many had heard the “Call” of the Palace once they had reclaimed it. Many came, many had also left, after seeing the Palace, returning to the lives they had always known.

So why hadn’t Shadow led his people back to the Forests that they had known and loved? Why had he remained here – encased within stone.

His tribe, like him, had grown; it had changed. There were new members within the tribe, as well as many who lost their lives along the way. Was it worth it all? To lose those that had walked with them? But the trade off was to have so many find their Recognized mates, to bare children… and now, even with the Magic of the Palace… his own love mate, who he had hoped to one day Recognize, was pregnant with his child. The water from his eyes stung, freezing in the chilly mountains, halting on his cheeks.

He heard the cubs outside the Palace; many of them, having gotten to know one another over the weeks, throwing balls of the fresh white snow at one another. One of the cubs was struck in the mouth and licked it, smiling at the taste of what he called ice cream.

They were happy. Most of them were happy. But there with those like Shadow… who felt imprisoned by the stone walls of the Palace. There was no denying the sensation of magic he could feel coursing through his blood; and all the loved ones he had lost, he could feel fluttering about, passing through him, sharing their love of him, their pride of all he had done.

He wasn’t sure what he should do next.
