STONEHOWL: Having endured an attack by humans, Shadow found allies within some of the humans, and it had only been those who followed their shaman, the Bone Dancer, who sought to wipe out the Elves. In a fight, that seemed to favor the humans, the tides of battle turned when the trolls joined in the fight against the humans; knowing that the humans would attempt to drive them out next. The Bone Dancer was killed by Vineweaver, who had suffered unimaginable torture at Bone Dancer’s hands. Wanting to leave the tainted memories behind, Shadow led his tribe on a quest to find others like themselves. In their journeys they found the Next Ones (Children of the High Ones), Pridewalkers, and others – and in the end, Shadow led them to the Palace of the High Ones. Believing he had found everything his heart desired, the home of his greatest ancestors, Shadow soon felt the urge to return to the woods; return to what he knew was home. He discovered, it’s not the Palace that makes it home; but it’s what the heart makes the home. Now Shadow has led some of his tribe back to the woods, near the Palace, where other elves from other tribes, also followed; either curious to see more of the world, or inspired by the leadership they saw in Shadow. It was much like life out on the plains; plants crackled easily beneath the feet, alerting prey of your approach. However, the one difference that impacted Spearclaw’s hunting was his vision. As a hunter on the plains, a member of the ill-fated Pridewalkers, he was used to be able to see great distances, across the flat plains. Here in the forest, a tree stood every three feet in front of him, in jagged, random patterns, that prevented seeing very far at all – which explained why the hunters of Stonehowl relied on both scent and sound, more than they relied on vision. On tonight’s hunt, one insisted on hunting with him. And she was one who rarely took no for an answer. Her name – Windfetcher. Slingshot in hand, she walked beside Spearclaw, glancing up at him from time to time, to make sure she was hunting “properly” but never asking; simply always mimicking Spearclaw’s pose and stance. Spearclaw looked down at Windfetcher and smiled. “So have you named that wolf pup of yours?” (1) Windfetcher smiled at the small wolf pouncing about next to her, chasing butterflies, and sometimes imaginary insects, dancing about in an endless, futile chase. “Hacklemane,” she said proudly. “He,” she began, and just then, he did exactly what she was about to explain. The wolf pup lowered his face close to the ground, his rear end sticking up, and his mane around his neck, raised up, the hackles giving the illusion he was much larger than he was. Then, he pounced, upon whatever imaginary insect the wolf saw. “Good name,” Spearclaw chuckled lightly. Then, without warning, Windfetcher asked, “You have feelings for my mother, don’t you?” Spearclaw choked, “Excuse me, what?” “My mother,” Windfetcher said, suddenly standing straight. “You have feelings for her,” she accused, though she didn’t sound angry, more matter-of-factly. Spearclaw cleared his throat. How was he – the greatest hunter of the Priderwalkers – suddenly so incredibly uncomfortable – because of a cub that was no older than ten seasons old? He looked at Windfetcher who stared back at him, unblinking, unwavering. Clearly she was going to get the answer to her question – tonight – right now, no less. “I do,” he finally said. After a moment, Windfetcher nodded and smiled. “I don’t blame you. She’s beautiful. The most beautiful of all. I hope I am beautiful like her. And can still be a chieftess, worthy of Shadow’s legacy.” Spearclaw laughed, suddenly relieved. He wasn’t sure what he expected from this cubling – but the shivers that danced up and down his spine was the kind of fear and nervousness he’s never felt before. Of course, there’s never been anyone who has made him feel the way Stillbreeze did. “Your cub,” Spearclaw pointed, “looks like he has the scent of something.” Windfetcher looked and watched as her wolf cub tried to squeeze itself into a small, enclosed hole on the side of the small hill. Windfetcher pulled the wolf cub from the hole and looked inside. She watched as a rabbit gave birth to a new den of rabbits. The whole was lined with bugs, that would have perhaps bothered most, but Windfetcher watched in wide eyed wonder as the birthing process happened. When it was done, seven rabbit kits had been born. “What’s in the hole?” Spearclaw asked. Windfetcher pulled her head out from the mound. She looked at Spearclaw, “Rabbits,” she said distantly. “Excellent, we will feed on them,” Spearclaw said, moving forward. “No,” Windfetcher extended her arm, not moving. “They were just born.” “I don’t understand,” Spearclaw began. “We won’t be eating these rabbits,” Windfetcher explained. “They’re just babies. This wouldn’t be an honorable hunt. They’re defenseless.” “My stomach is defenseless,” Spearclaw countered. Windfetcher did not waiver; did not move. “I said no.” “Look cubling,” Spearclaw began. But he could see she was not going to move. He sighed. If being stubborn was a requirement for being a chieftess, she would excel, he thought to himself. “Fine,” he finally said. As they walked back, she looked at Spearclaw, “I want another brother. Or sister.
