Rain
Hate
A precious memory or heritage
Imagine/imagination (wherever you want to take that: pretending, lying, ornate basket weaving...)

Grey clouds spilled across the heavens, blotting out the light of the two moons, and the stars; like thick oil spilled across water. Gentle thunder rumbled but soon turned into roaring beasts in the heavens screaming in deafening tones. Then the rain came down, gentle at first, but with the sound of the roar of thunder, it pelted down like daggers.

From the trees surrounding their stone holt the Stonehowl tribe watched as humans marched into their caverns and began to overturn everything. Fourteen men and women, branding weapons, led by another – a taller, stronger human named Rumdreer moved through the holt ransacking everything in front of them. He had been the leader of the Bloodtide – a band of savage humans who killed anything and anyone that got in their way. Murder was not only their way of life but how the found joy in the world.

“You’ve gone far enough, Rumdreer,” a voice said.

Rumdreer turned and looked as a sly smile crossed his face. “Well, well, well, Balgar’s son shows his face. Got to say,” Rumdreer waved his axe around, “you’ve got more courage than your father. He ran and hid. Ran to his priestess, begging her to find a way for him to live. I made him watch as I took her on the altar before slitting her throat in the middle of my climax, then gutted your father like the brainless fish he was. You,” he pointed his axe at Buren, “your father – you’re what’s wrong with this world. Believing in a higher power. Siding with…” He looked around, “… demons, where ever they might be hiding. We need to rely on ourselves. There is no higher power. We are the highest power. We’re human and we need to cleanse the world.”

Stream looked down – and her eyes fell on Buren. She looked behind her where he’d been a moment ago and he was not there. “No,” she began to whisper. “No, I can’t lose him…” But that’s when she noticed she could not see their cub, Stonecutter, in the tree with her. She was beginning to panic when she heard Rumdreer’s voice.

“Well, well, looks like you didn’t just side with the demons, you laid with them as well.” Stream looked and there, now walking behind Buren was her cub. “I remember when I was killing one of the female harpies – I was giving it to her nice and good – she begged me to stop, but I could tell she liked it. I didn’t wait to see if she was going to give birth eventually – slit her throat when I was done with her. Finished on her while she lie there, choking on her own blood.”

Buren could clearly imagine the vision; he’d seen the harpies – elves, like Stonehowl, who rode animals – they rode on the backs of giant owls. They were beautiful and elegant, but lethal hunters. And Buren had heard countless horror stories of the Bloodtide under Rumdreer’s leadership. It would be one thing if it was just Rumdreer who believed in his racial purification and murderous ways, but he’d managed to find others, like minded in racial purification and murder. Many did not agree with his violent sexual urges, and preferred a clean kill – but they followed him regardless.

“We’re going to have to kill your boy,” Rumdreer shrugged, and pointed his axe at Buren, “and you as well. You’re human and all – but you could never be like us. You’re impure.”

Stream’s heart was pounding in her chest – her mind racing back to the first time she felt Buren’s embrace (1) and the night she gave birth. (2) If something happened, she may not be able to heal them since her powers tended to fluctuate since expending so much energy, many years ago saving Buren’s life after Shadow had stabbed him. (3) She also knew she could not live without them.

Stream jumped down from the tree and came to stand beside Buren, putting her arm around her son, Stonecutter.

“So this is the demon you laid with?” Rumdreer looked her up and down. “Well, at least you have good taste… in demons. Since you laid with her, I will take pleasure of taking her from behind. Let her know how a real man does things – and finish inside of her, just as I cut off her head.”

Snowspring was the next to leap down – the young daughter of Shadow and Foxhair, she had all the courage, spirit and wisdom of her parents – but she was still young, only fourteen seasons old. “To get through them, you will need to go through me.”

Rumdreer laughed. “You demons are certainly confident.”

Windfetcher came down the tree to stand next to them. “You threaten my tribe.”

“You? You are their leader? A woman?” Despite having females in Rumdreer’s group with him; and despite being equally powerful and brutal as warriors, women in Rumdreer’s mind would never be in a place of leadership – and those women who followed accepted this. “This just keeps getting better and better,” he laughed.

Echo, Stillbreeze and Vineweaver all jumped down next.

Rumdreer looked them over. “I thought all of you rode on the backs of wolves, not climbed trees like monkeys.”

Vineweaver smiled. “We all do ride on the back of wolves.”

The wolves howled all around Rumdreer and his men. Eyes flickered from the brush from the torches held by Rumdreer’s followers.

Rumdreer smiled. “Good. Let’s get this over with.”
